Gap Denim Jacket with Sleeves Cut Off (DIY Denim Vest) - Snagged at Gap a long time ago

This outfit is as basic as it gets, but it suits me and it really is me.  I was trying on a bunch of clothes and I had these Siwy camilla black denim shorts on, which I had just gotten in the mail from Black Label Boutique.  I love denim shorts, whether they are low-rise or high-rise.  They are the quintessential piece for summer and Siwy denim makes some of the softest shorts I have come across so I keep collecting more and more.  These are nice because the pocket doesn't hang out from the bottom.  I can go either way, but some people really get worked up about the pocket overhang situation.  I have better things to worry about, like guinea pigs with bacterial infections.

I have had this Gap denim jacket for a while and it never fit quite right.  In the midst of my closet clean I finally gave myself permission to cut off the sleeves, something I have been wanting to do from the moment I bought it.  In that instant it was transformed into the perfect denim vest.  I am no DIY master, but I do know how to work a pair of scissors since I groom all my dogs myself.  I think I was worried I would do a bad job cutting off the sleeves, which really makes me sound like a perfectionist.  I plead guilty.  Anyway, cutting off the sleeves of this jacket brought me back to childhood when instead of shopping for denim shorts when school got out I would just cut jeans I already owned into shorts.  I was pretty good at it because I liked to make sure both legs were even and I always allotted extra room because you can always make the shorts shorter, but you cannot make them longer once the fabric is gone.  It was a good feeling and it made me think of all those summers riding my bike and going to the library to get 15 more Sweet Valley High books to read.  One time I even won a huge container of Laffy Taffy candies for reading the most books in a month.  Too bad I didn't like Laffy Taffies.

J.Crew Calf Hair Belt in Leopard - Snagged off for $60 Retail

This is probably one of my most casual outfits to date that I have actually posted on the blog.  I really ended up liking it.  My boyfriend wanted to go out for sushi so I hurried up and threw something comfy on my body.  J.Crew is the only place I could find a leopard calf hair belt and the price was right.  I have been wanting one for ages to wear with denim for a pop of animal print.  This chambray shirt seemed to be a great match for my overworn black denim Siwy shorts.  The parka was conveniently added for cool night weather and my Topshop ankle boots were laying out in my closet from a recent wear so I thought why not put them to work again.  Despite my love of Italian footwear, these Topshop aggie boots have a very special place in my heart.  I doubt I will ever get sick of them.  They are so damn comfortable.

Elizabeth and James Lingerie Shorts - Snagged off for $245 Retail

Gap Chambray Shirt - Gift from Boyfriend at Aspen Grove mall in Denver

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Luella Wedge Sandals in Black - Snagged off for $128 (Retail: $405)

Erin from Otrera was kind enough to send me this beautiful hand sewn silk chiffon scarf.  It has such fine detailing including Hamsa charms with glass eyes.  I styled it in a sarong fashion and I like the pop of color it added to my outfit.  These Elizabeth and James shorts were the perfect backdrop to show off the vibrant pink scarf.  You could really dress up any pair of shorts by adding a large enough scarf and tying it around your waist as an accent.  Otrera was the first company I accepted a gift from because I really thought their scarves were high quality and fit in with my usual style.  I tied up this chambray shirt because it was 90 degrees out and I wanted to stay in theme with the scarf tie.

I took a little hiatus from blogging to spend time with my family who visited from North Dakota.  I went tubing in a creek with my 15 year old nephew, which was quite the treacherous experience.  We also found a swing along the creek that someone had made and tied to a willow tree.  It was nice to dip my toes in the water while swinging.  My boyfriend and I took my family up to Boulder to see some sights and we ate many dinners together.  I cannot remember how many pots of coffee we all went through.

I am a tomboy at heart so being in a murky creek where swimming is prohibited is right up my alley.  Fashion is only a small slice of my life and I like to share it with others online because it is difficult to find people in Denver who share my love of fashion.  Most of the time you can find me in my Nike shorts and an old ripped up t-shirt I stole from my boyfriend.  I also own a lot of sneakers, just like Jerry from Seinfeld.  I played so much tennis this past week that my arms and back are sore, but I loved it.  We also biked some 20 milers after my family left a few days ago.  Today is my birthday, but I don't like to make a big deal about it.

Thank you for all the e-mails and messages regarding my absence.  I did not know I would be so missed, but I appreciate your concern.
